Nuummite - The name Nuummite which means "derived from Nuuk" in Greenlandic was found by the geologist Peter W. Uitterdijk Appel in 1982, near Nuuk Greenland. (1) It is a metamorphic rock, which means that it is formed as a result of the conversion of existing rocks. The main elements of Nuummite are gedrite and anthophyllite, with fewer amounts of pyrite, pyrrhotine, and chalcopyrite. Nuummite's iridescent play of color is due to its lamellar, fibrous structure. It was formed more than three billion years ago, so it is also known as the oldest rock on earth.
